STAY THE FUCK OUT PHB

Does anyone remember when this forum was about animation?

In all seriousness, has anyone really watched this show? I went into it expecting it to be an "I ironically like this" type of deal but 10 episodes in I was hooked. This AV club review really sums it up.

The animation style is great, fits the show perfectly. Sure, it's simplistic, but it's kids TV that I find legitimately entertaining. I think that's a pretty impressive accomplishment.

All of the first season episodes are on YouTube, but fair warning: the pilot episode, like many others, is not a particularly good representation of the show. Give it 2-3 episodes if you want to try it out. They're short.

(The show's creator, Lauren Faust, has previously worked on shows such as Powerpuff Girls, and there's definitely a bit of that style reminiscent here.)

I'm a fan of the show as well. I remember seeing a few of the fan-made trailers on YouTube (such as the PonyCraft trailer) and being impressed by the quality of the animation. Still, I thought to myself, "It's just a little girls' show designed for nothing except selling toys. I'm sure the writing, etc. must be terrible." Several weeks later, Scott at VGCats did a comic and blog post about it, so I decided to give it a shot.

Boy, I could not have been more wrong in my assumptions. It's got great writing, clever humor, and a fair amount of action/adventure. I think one thing that sets this apart from other girls' shows is that it's not dumbed-down or too girlie. Sure, it's a show about ponies, but they don't spend all day at the spa getting their hooves done and gossiping about the latest boy band. They adventure into the forest to fight dragons, get kidnapped, face their fears, etc. The show portrays the lead characters as both feminine and strong - something rarely seen on TV these days.

I'm surprised there aren't more people on this board who watch the show. As GM noted, animation used to be a cornerstone around here. Even though CN and [AS] are no longer viable outlets for quality anime (or cartoons), I assume we're all still somewhat interested in animation. To the educated crowd (us), MLP should be noteworthy as another one of Faust's creations. I know several of us here liked Foster's, and Faust seems to be one of the few quality cartoonists left on TV these days.

Oh, and did I mention that the show pays homage to such classics as Pepe LePew and Snidely Whiplash? Yeah...

Here's a well-written article exploring why adult men enjoy the cartoon (and its fandom).

I've watched around half of season one as well as the episodes from season two so far and I have to say this show is hit and miss. I'm hoping there was a progression I'm not seeing (I'm watching them out of order), but some episodes feel squarely aimed at young girls while others are more entertaining/humorous and genuinely make me want to keep watching.

I don't hate musicals by definition, but every time one of the characters starts to sing I just fast forward. Quality/theme seems to be polarized. I can only think of only one time that an episode hasn't fit entirely into the entertaining or passable buckets.

Agreed. Overall, I really like the show, but there are a few stinkers in there. When I first started watching, the frist few eps I saw were pretty bad. I almost gave up but decided to watch a few of the fan faves on YouTube. After that, I was hooked.

The above car belongs to a female fan in North Dallas. With any luck, I might see it around town.
