Probably my new favorite film of 2012 so far. Or maybe right behind Chronicle. I'll decide on that later. But Carter's a whole hell of a lot of fun. It's kind of like the Star Wars prequels, minus the stupid. Plus an actual sense of attachment to the characters. And a lead that doesn't embarrass himself. And a romantic interest with whom the lead has some legitimate sense of chemistry. And about a hundred other things Episodes I-III lacked.

If we compared every film to the Star Wars prequel trilogy, we'd have to change the name of the medium to Citizen Kaning.

Are you EVER going to have a kind word when I voice an opinion?

I'm just saying, you can make anything sound good when you compare it to those films.

I liked it. It took a little too long to build up, but once it got moving, it felt like the rip-roaring adventure of the novel. Lots of great set design in particular. The acting was good, the plot at least payed lip service to some of the more interesting subplots, and there's some honest-to-god character development for the protagonist during an over-the-top cartoonishly pitched battle, of all things.

Having just finished A Princess of Mars, I see what you mean by that. The events of the book made the means by which Carter understands the Martian language clearer, I thought it was clever how they worked the name "Dotar Sojat" into the movie, and it was pretty funny that a certain character's death in the novel was just as abrupt as in the film. Pity that it flopped so hard.

SXS, PHB hates everything.

Actually, you're both at extremes for me. Basically the only opinions that you profess that I can actually use to help me decide whether an entertainment is for me is as follows: If PHB actually likes something, it's probably going to be something I enjoy, while if SXS actually hates something, it's almost guaranteed to be something I will also hate. (there are exceptions) That isn't so say that I don't also like some things that SXS does, or hate some of the same things PHB does, it's just that I can't trust SXS love or PHB hate to grant me any usable information, since those are the default settings.

I don't mean to be but I'm very black and white when it comes to feelings. If I HAVE feelings about something, they are either strongly positive or strongly negative. I'm utterly ambivalent about everything else.

What exactly are you defining as "usable information"? With exceptions, I typically try to go into some detail as to why I like/dislike a movie (and yes, I have expressed negative opinions before).
