Thomas Barnett: The Pentagon's new map for war and peace

I just watched this through twice and I have to say I think the idea is brilliant. It's clear that our military in its current form can't handle what some people like to term "Fourth Generation Warfare" (might have seen it referred to as 4GW), which is basically what's happening in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Don't be scared away by the topic, the talk is presented in an interesting and very funny way.

I've always believed the U.S. military was a morass of bureaucracy and needed re-organization.

It's nice to see a plan out there that actually looks like it would work and isn't limited to current situations.

After watching it (again), I liked his emphasis on war between the US and China being a fantasy. Also, his views on merging the Marines with the SysAdmin force to prevent it "from being a pussy force like the UN" is a very insightful one.

Well he mentioned it being 2/3s civilian, and you don't send civies into a former war zone without an armed escort.

I do think he's being a little idealistic about learning from our mistake and having this happen though.

True. I think at best we'll see elements of his proposal implemented. Perhaps an augmented State Department that can pull off more concentrated efforts and work even more closely with other nations, agencies, etc.
