Dan O'Bannon is dead.

He created the Alien franchise, and did work on other sci-fi cult classics.

J.D. Salinger, Recluse Author, dead at 91

Edit: Last night I read a whole bunch about Salinger (there isn't much out there). Really interesting stuff - he must have been a fascinating personality.
I found this quote to be particularly accurate:
Phillip Roth wrote:
The response of college students to the work of J. D. Salinger indicates that he, more than anyone else, has not turned his back on the times but, instead, has managed to put his finger on whatever struggle of significance is going on today between self and culture.

A couple more recent passings: Irvin Kershner, director of The Empire Strikes Back, and Leslie Nielsen.

That last one was particularly confusing to me, as initially I though people were saying that Liam Neeson was dead.

Liam Neeson doesn't die. He gets bored with whupping ass and retires.
