After months of politicians wanting to kill each other, we've got a bill that has a chance of passing after Olympia Snowe was willing to vote it out of committee 14-9

Now it has to be combined with another Senate Health Care Bill, which will be combined with the combined 3 House bills, which will then go back to Congress to all be voted on at once. And since Olympia Snowe said she might not vote for the bill when it comes to the Senate, there's no guarantees it will even go through.

Awesome.

I don't suppose I can sample you guys for any opinions on Health Care in general. Have any of you guys been keeping up with it enough to worry about the need for Public Option, Subsidies, and other little nuances?

I kept up with all of it during my self imposed unemployment period. Now that I have a job, I have no freaking clue what's going on in the world.

You're not getting paid to know what's going on in the world.

I'm all in favor of healthcare reform - heck anytime we can make things better, I say go for it. However, what I don't like is reform for the sake of reform, and that's what's going on in DC. The current proposals will only make the situation worse. More importantly, they're an unconstitutional taking of our liberties designed to make us increasingly dependent on the government. This isn't about healthcare - like climate control, gun control, etc. it's just about control.

Mandatory healthcare?! Are you kidding me? Who are they to tell me that I have to have health insurance?! That's a gross violation of my freedom, and there's no Constitutional authority for Congress to do it! If I want to go without insurance and assume the associated risks, that's my decision and noone else's - certainly not the government's!

How can we fix healthcare? Well, the biggest problem we have is that of entitlement. "Waahh, I dropped out of highschool, have no job, and now I can't pay for my eighth abortion! I deserve to have someone else pay for my decisions!" Yeah? Well screw you, moron - you screwed up, you fix it! If we stopped giving these people free stuff everytime they complained, they might actually be motivated to work for it. And that goes for emergency rooms, too. If it ain't life-threatening, make 'em show proof of income upfront. If it is urgent, treat 'em, then make sure they pay. Garnish their wages, seize their assets, whatever. No handouts unless the person is truly incapable of working (i.e. severely handicapped). Also, Medicare/Medicaid is fraught with fraud. It's a huge sinkhole, and the cost is passed on to the legitimate customers. In the end, it just proves how bad the government is at running a business. (You know, like how FedEx and UPS are thriving while USPS is floundering...) We need to get the feds out of private industry, and let the free market work. "That government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves." -T. Jefferson

I've been groaning at this since the whole fiasco started. The general public via just about every sign and credible poll shows that no matter what it is called, the people just don't want government run healthcare.

An interesting fun fact: after Government Motors and this railroad scheme the government will be in control of almost 50% of the US economy.

So the Health Care Bill passed the House and a procedural vote in the Senate managed to squeak by 60-39 exactly on the party line. A handful of Dems voted to let the bill be debated, but also said they wouldn't necessarily pass the bill. In fact one of the Senators, Senator Landrieu, only voted to let the bill be debated after a 100 million dollars in extra federal aid for her state of Louisiana (it's been nicknamed the Louisiana Purchase). Meanwhile the Republicans are more or less sitting on their hands using any and all delay tactics available to slow down the bill.
