The first one is humorous and also quite true. As I've stated elsewhere, the last one is a load of crap. After yesterday, it could just as easily go the other way. Having just a single glass between them with both of them drinking from it would far more accurate.

Awesome. But why does Mr. Blue Tie have a pocket on each breast while Mr. Red has one on neither? Also, pretty much the same argument applies to gun control. More taxpayer dollars spent on enforcing gun control, and yet more wackos shooting people.

But think of the children.
In other news, the ATF has put their cards on the table for all to see. If you don't feel like wading through that to see what it is they're doing, here's the relevant part:
 | | The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms requires the following items, Purchase Description Determined by Line Item, to the following:
LI 001, EXACT MATCH ONLY - Leatherman Micra Color: Blue - Part number 64340101K Engraved with: ATF-Asset Forfeiture AND "always think forfeiture" PLEASE REFER TO THE ATTACHMENT. NOTE: ATF MAY REQUEST A SAMPLE TO DETERMINE IF IT MEETS OUR REQUIREMENT. A picture of the item may be substituted in place of the actual sample. ***Partial Shipments are allowed. Please use the space below to explain your delivery schedule. Preferred Delivery is between November 15th-23rd, NLT November 23rd***, 2000, EA; |
Mmm-mmm, government money being spent on multitools with a motto engraved on it. Our tax money going to good use. While this is business as usual, the motto itself is extremely troubling.
 | | In civil forfeiture cases, the US Government sues the item of property, not the person; the owner is effectively a third party claimant. Once the government establishes probable cause that the property is subject to forfeiture, the owner must prove on a "preponderance of the evidence" that it is not. |
If the ATF takes a firearm you legally bought and own, it's up to you the owner to prove in a court of law it's actually yours and not illegal. It sounds like some tinhat paranoia until you consider that the ATF recently confiscated what amounts to the entire inventory of Cavalry Arms, a federally-licensed AR-15 manufacturer out in Arizona that sells to private citizens as well as law enforcement customers. They post on another set of forums I've posted on for years, and I know they're extremely anal about following the law for the express purpose of trying to prevent this sort of thing from happening, but it still didn't stop ATF this time. They're in a world of hurt right now because they need to prove that their stock of legally-manufactured firearms is in fact that, but that same, confiscated stock and the sales of it is what they depend on for income. Lawyers capable of handling a federal civil case of this sort don't come for cheap, either.
Thanks federal government for making me even more paranoid and distrustful of another one of your numerous bureaus/tentacles of encroaching doom.

There was a great asshole moment on NPR where a cop from DC was justifying the ban on guns there saying "Look at how easy guns are for criminals to get now - just think how easy it would be if they were legal!" Gah.

I don't really have anything against the police, but that's a fairly typical statement from a police officer working somewhere as messed up as DC. Even so, I strongly disagree with that line of thinking. Politicians and groups in favor of stricter firearms legislation LOVE getting police officers advocating their cause because people are suckers for "experts" in soundbites. They also love to make the argument that police are more qualified than the rest of the unwashed masses, so we can trust them with firearms that we can't even own. That's right everyone, trust the government to make decisions for you because we know better than you!
Appealing to authority in arguments is a fallacy and widely recognized as bad form; I'm surprised people let them get away with that as much as they do in scenarios like these.

Heheh, that fourth one's pretty good. But in the last one, he's on a gay date and he has an Ann Coulter tatoo? That seems a bit contradictory. (Or is that the point?)

Sadly, that's what a lot of the American public truely believes. Universal healthcare, social security, bans on trans-fatty foods at restraunts - it's as if they think the government is their mother.
