The title is a reference to "Stray Cat Strut" by the Stray Cats.
This episode is a comedic tribute to the Bruce Lee film "Game of Death",
in which Bruce has a fight scene with Karim Abdul Jabar, who plays the villain.
Jabar's character's name in the film is "Hakim" (thus the name "Abdul Hakim").
Also, lots of Bruce Lee scattered about the episode - a Bruce Lee poster on
a building, the "Way of the Dragon" model nunchucks, etc. Not to mention the
obviously Hong Kong influenced setting.
The two main characters on the TV show "Big Shot" are named "Punch" and
"Judy." In case you don't get that, "Punch and Judy" is the name of an age-old
puppet show originating in Britain.
Not really a reference, but something notable: David Lucas, Spike's voice
actor, did the voice for the surfer-dude weapons shop guy. It's just amusing
to me how flexible the guy's voice is.
Spike uses the line "A fist full of Wulongs" (English dub only); a reference
to Clint Eastwood's film "A Fist Full of Dollars" (which, if I recall correctly,
is actually a remake of an Akira Kurosawa Samurai Drama "Yojimbo"; What goes
around comes around, hey?)
I'm not totally sure about this one, but I think that the first chase scene
might be a reference to Scooby Doo chase scenes. It's rather hokey and comedic,
there's funky music playing in the background, bad 70's clothing tastes, and
a van; See? It makes perfect sense! . . . .maybe it's just me. :p
During his phone conversation, Hakim uses the codename "Snoop." Considering
all the dog business in this episode, this has got to be a reference
to "Snoop Doggy Dog" or "Snoop Dog" as they call him nowadays. It makes even
more sense if you consider the fact that one of the songs on the soundtrack
is called "Doggy Dog."
If you notice any references that I missed, I would appreciate
it if you e-mail me.
